About Silverdale, Washington
If you live in Silverdale, you already know what a gem it is. Home to roughly 19,000 people, Silverdale is not actually a city, but a census-designated place (aka unincorporated community) that is part of larger Kitsap County.
Long before Silverdale came into existence, the native Salish people lived throughout the Puget Sound area. When Captain George Vancouver came to the area in 1792, he named the area after one of his officers and declared it property of Great Britain. In 1853, the U.S. government signed a treaty with the Suquamish people that ceded most of the landed around the Kitsap Peninsula to the U.S. This event led to the first loggers arriving to the shore of Dyes Inlet in 1854. As the land around Silverdale was deforested from logging, new Scandinavian immigrants moved in in the 1880s to establish farms. A Farmer’s Cooperative was created in 1887 by area farmers to allow them to sell surplus crops, eggs, milk, and chicken to Seattle and Bremerton markets. In 1920 the Port of Silverdale was founded, which became a destination point for ferries and commerce around the county and to Seattle.
Today, Silverdale is a hub for shopping and dining primarily divided into two separate areas: Old Town Silverdale along Dyes Inlet, and the Kitsap Mall area featuring big box stores and restaurants.
