About Olympia, WA

As we’re sure you know, Olympia is the capital of Washington. But just how much do you know about the history of this area? Did you know that prior to its discovery by Peter Puget and the Vancouver Expedition in 1792, the area had been home to Lushootseed-speaking peoples for thousands of years? These include populations of Nisqually, Squaxin, Puyallup, Suquamish, Chehalis, and Duwamish.

Olympia is also home to one of the better park systems in all of Washington. The 600-acre Woodard Bay Natural Resources Conservation Area lies along 5 miles of Puget Sound waterfront and encompasses the Henderson Inlet bays of Chapman and Woodard. Percival Landing Park includes close to a mile of boardwalk along Budd Inlet and includes a picnic area, playground, and open spaces. Watershed Park rests on the site of the former Olympia waterworks and includes a loop trail through a second-growth forest. Other parks include Sunrise Park, Priest Point Park, Yauger Park, and Burfoot Park.

Things to Do in Olympia, WA

Visit Mima Mounds

Southwest of Olympia at the edge of the Capitol State Forest is a unique landscape feature that no one can completely explain. Many of tried to figure out what caused the development of the Mima Mounds, which are acres and acres of symmetric mounds approximately 6 feet high by 30 feet in diameter. Theories abound from the idea that they are Native American burial mounds, or that they’re the former dens of a vast population of pocket gophers. Some think that that they were created by earthquakes or glacial melt. If you’re out on Waddell Creek Road, stop in for a look.

Thornewood Castle

One of the more majestic mansions ever built in the Pacific Northwest, Thornewood Castle was a gift to his bride Anna from Chester Thorne, the president of The National Bank of Commerce in Tacoma and founder of the Port of Tacoma. The home is 27,000 square feet and features 54 rooms on a 35-acre estate, featuring a Secret Garden designed by the Olmsted brothers (of Central Park fame) and strewn with elegant statues. The home was occupied by Thorn, his wife Anna, their daughter Anita and family until his death. It is now a bed & breakfast.

Olympia Harbor Days

With Olympia being located on south Puget Sound, one would assume it must have an annual celebration to honor this proximity. And sure enough, there is one. Olympia Harbor Days is a longstanding tradition, dating back to 1974. That year, the Olympia South Sound Chapter of the State Capital Museum Association came up with the idea to bring back vintage tugboats to show off the area’s maritime history. In 1983 this event merged with the Harbor Fair and today features all kinds of wonderful family-friendly events with entertainment, food, art, and history on display for this 3-day festival.
