    About Bellingham, Washington

    History

Bellingham is the 12th most populous city in the state of Washington with over 90,000 residents as of 2018. It’s a scant 21-mile drive to the border with Canada.

The history of Bellingham dates back thousands of years. The area was originally inhabited by the Coast Salish peoples of the Lummi tribe and neighboring tribes. Then, in 1858, the Fraser Canyon Gold Rush caused an influx of treasure-seekers to come north from California, which made the city (then known as Whatcom) a boomtown. After this, coal was the major industry from the mid-19th to mid-20th centuries.

In 1903, the cities of Whatcom, Bellingham, Sehome, & Fairhaven formed to create the city of Bellingham.

Today, Bellingham has an array of industries with medical services and higher education leading the way. Western Washington University is located here. With its proximity Bellingham Bay and the San Juan Islands, there are plenty of water activities to be had including sea-kayaking, fishing, and whale-watching. 90-minutes to the east is North Cascades National Park and prominent Mt. Baker. The city was selected as one of Outside Magazine’s 16 Best Places to Live for 2016.
