A Town With Real History
Phoenix has a livelier past than its quiet stretch of I-5 might suggest. The town got its start in 1851, when the Colver family began selling off land to other settlers, with early residents mining gold along Anderson Creek and Coleman Creek or working the local mill. For a while, the settlement went by the nickname “Gasburg” — after a particularly talkative cook everyone called “Gassy.” When the town needed a more official name for its new post office, settlers looked at a sign on Main Street for a local branch of Phoenix Insurance and decided that would do just fine. Phoenix also had its own Civil War-era outpost, Camp Baker, and in 1914 local resident Marion Towne became the first woman elected to the Oregon legislature. We’re glad to be part of a town with that much history behind it.
